| Video: 100 Seasons of Utah Basketball - Moment 13 For Utah head coach Jack Gardner, the most important statistic in the Utes' Feb. 24, 1962 matchup with BYU was how many times his team fed the post. Billy 'The Hill' McGill was in the post for Utah that night. Nobody else kept that stat in those days. Of course, nobody else had a player like McGill. On that night in Provo, McGill set a Utah record that has never been broken. He scored 60 points in a single game. It was fitting that his outstanding effort came against the Cougars at George Albert Smith Fieldhouse. McGill's 60 was also a new team, conference, Fieldhouse and personal career record. He hit 27-of-38 field-goal attempts. He probably could have scored more, but at times he elected to pass the ball off to his open teammates. Four Utah players were in double figures in the game and the Utes shot 60 percent from the field. Utah needed every one of those field goals and all that hot shooting to take a 106-101 win over the Cougars. Utah fans will long remember the night Billy 'The Hill' dumped 60 on the Y. |
